There is a somewhat belated obituary of trumpet player Dickie Hawdon in today's Independent.
Hawdon, who died on June 24, was that rare breed of musician able to cross the stylistic divide (our own Mike Gilby was another) going from Ken Colyer and Chris Barber to Tubby Hayes and Johnny Dankworth in one 'giant step'.
I recall seeing him at Newcastle City Hall with the Yorkshire Jazz Band as well as the Kirchin Band and, of course, Dankworth.
A fine musician.
Thanks to Russell, our man on the graveyard shift, for drawing my attention to this.
Lance.
